Part II: Where to Begin …

In “It’s Time to Write A New Story”, I submitted we individually and collectively have an historic opportunity to proactively reset, reimagine, and redesign teaching and learning to meet the needs of each learner.   “Why?” Simply put, we can design a system of education for “all” or better put, “each” learner irrespective of where they live, their ethnicity, national origin, race, gender, age, language, disability, or family configuration.  The inconvenient truth is not all students have equitable access, opportunity or resources to learn as do their non-disadvantaged peers.  This is a product of the design of our present education system.  No excuse or explanation will suffice as we have known for decades that the system in place has not, can not meet the needs of each learner.  It wasn’t designed to do so. Where do we begin?  How do we begin a redesign? I posited that to authentically address the shortcoming...

What Is Becoming Clearer? Part I of a three-part series

It was a long weekend – a lot of debate, discourse, and discussion underpinned by opinion, optimism, and of course, partisanship.  Rhetorically, when did the health, well-being, and safety of self and others become partisan? Suffice it to say, as far as we have come as a nation, we have “miles to go before we sleep and promises to keep” before we unite and behave as “E Plurbius Unum”. Equity begins with Universal Literacy

With all that is going on - I am again amazed by the numerous technology advancements.  Teetering on the obvious, technology is only limited by our imaginations and ability to connect dots.  A few thoughts as we begin to shift from the tyranny of the urgent to thinking about the "next" with respect to teaching and learning in a "different" world. Connecting Dots? Our imaginations are a liability when the “dots” of what, why, how and desired impact are not connected.  If technology is only ever seen as a “what” and not a “how” it will never realize the promise let alone the impact it must make to ensure each learner acquires and applies the skills, knowledge, or experiences necessary for individual and corporate success. The emphasis on literacy as one example, is now more than ever mission critical.  Without literacy, innovations in technology however advanced, will fail to make the envisioned impact for many learners - learners who remain the most a...
